I’ve lived in the South all my life, and yet, I don’t have a southern accent. It may be because my parents don’t, or I’ve been traveling since I was 6 weeks old, who knows. All I know is that I have an American accent, but you wouldn’t know which part of the US I’m from.
Now, I will admit that when I get all fired up and passionate about something, the southern belle in me comes out, and it’s quite funny.
One thing about my accent, If I’m around people with a strong accent, I will start sounding like them. British? I can’t do it now, but when I spent 10 days in the UK, I was sounding quite British by the time I came home. Yet, even though I live in the South, I haven’t picked it up. Very weird, how that works.
I took one of those obviously scientific and completely accurate tests someone put up on the internet, and this is what I got:
| What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The West
Your accent is the lowest common denominator of American speech. Unless you’re a SoCal surfer, no one thinks you have an accent. And really, you may not even be from the West at all, you could easily be from Florida or one of those big Southern cities like Dallas or Atlanta. |
